Human bones, believed to be a woman’s, have been found in New South Wales’ Belanglo State Forest, the same area where notorious backpacker murderer Ivan Milat buried his victims almost 20 years ago.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of the bones belonging to a Milat victim but are being careful not to not draw quick conclusions.
Several items have been collected from the scene, including bones, a skull and some clothing.
The remains, which were located about 5km from where Milat dumped his known victims, were discovered by a group of trail bike riders on Sunday 29 August.
Milat was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for killing seven people, aged 19 to 22, between 1989 and 1992. Five of the victims were backpackers (three German and two British). The horrors depicted in 2005 film Wolf Creek are claimed to be loosely based on his crimes.
Police would not say if Milat will be questioned in relation to the discovery of the bones.
