Aussie convict sites receive World Heritage status

Port Arthur, Fremantle Prison and Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks are three of 11 convict sites which received World Heritage status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) over the weekend.

Federal environmental minister Peter Garrett announced on Sunday that the group would be known as the Australian Convict Sites and said that the listing signifies global recognition of areas which represent modern Australia, the ABC reported.

But indigenous activists have spoken out against the move, with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre calling for a stop to any more “white Australian” sites while indigenous history is being neglected and destroyed.

The sites are an addition to the 17 existing World Heritage sites in Australia where only two of which are buildings.
