Irish Backpacker Drowns in Kakadu

Crocs are not thought to be responsible for the backpacker's death

A 27-year-old Irish backpacker has drowned while swimming in a billabong in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park.

It is believed the man was the only traveller on his 20-person tour to swim at the notoriously-dangerous Malanbanjbanjdju Billabong. Police have said a crocodile attack was unlikely.

The alarm was raised when the backpacker failed to surface above the water, at about 7pm, on Saturday night. Police and park rangers finally found his body, in about two metres of water, just after 10pm. Investigators do not believe the man had been drunk.

A police spokesperson told the NT News: “No bite wounds had been found on the man’s body.

“There were no signs of a crocodile being involved — he got into trouble and didn’t surface,” she added.

The tourist’s name has not yet been released but he is believed to be from Northern Ireland.

Investigations are continuing.

UPDATE: DROWNED BACKPACKER NAMED AS BELFAST MAN TONY NORNEY
