More young people could soon be heading Down Under, following news that there are 70 graduate candidates chasing every job in the UK this year.
The dramatic rise in competition, up from 48 last year, has been put down to a drop in new jobs coupled with the rollover of last year’s graduates who were unable to find jobs during the recession, according to a poll of more than 200 companies by the Association of Graduate Recruiters.
As a result, British university graduates have been told to get flexible about the work they are prepared to do.
The Association of Graduate Recruiters’ chief executive Carl Gilleard said: “[Students] need both short-term and long-term career goals because you’re graduating in a very tough climate.
“Any employment is better than no employment [even] if it’s about flipping burgers or stacking shelves rather than being sat at home feeling sorry for yourself and vegetating.”
In the meantime, average graduate salaries have remained stagnant at around £25,000.
The ongoing situation is expected to encourage more university leavers to put off looking for a job immediately and go travelling for a while instead.
