New Zealand is World’s Most Peaceful. Again

New Zealand has been named the most peaceful nation in the world for the second year running.

The Kiwis once again topped the Global Peace Index (GPI), which rewarded New Zealand for its political stability, safety and harmonious relations with neighbouring countries like Australia, which came in at number 19.

The index, which is compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, compares 149 countries in key areas, such as conflict, safety, security and military factors.

Also in the top five most peaceful countries were Iceland, Japan, Austria and Norway.

Ireland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Finland and Sweden completed the top 10.

Iraq was ranked the country least at peace for the fourth year running, meaning the Middle Eastern hotspot has consistently been in bottom place since the index was first compiled in 2007.

The USA only managed a lowly 85th place, below nations like Sierra Leone and Malawi. Domestic homicides, military spending and involvement in external conflicts were held responsible.

Canada came 14th, Germany 16th, the UK 31st and France 32nd.

The index, released last week, suggests the world has become slightly less peaceful since the last survey was taken 12 months ago.
