ASK TUMBRELLA: Where To Live In Australia?

Fed up of living in a dorm?

I’ve decided I want to stay longer in Australia and want to find myself a place of my own, where do you suggest I start looking?

Can’t get enough of the place eh? Well, there’s plenty of options, depending on how long you want to stay and how much cash you’ve got.

If you want you’re own flat or house, try websites like www.realestate.com.au and www.domain.com.au. Be warned though, getting your own place Down Under is a big step.

Most places come unfurnished, demand you commit to at least six months, plus want a hefty bond up front. You’ll probably even have to show proof of your income and get a reference from your boss.

Fear not, however, there’s always heaps of spare rooms up for grabs, normally with far fewer strings attached. A great place to start is www.gumtree.com.au, as well as www.share-accommodation.net.

Even easier are the mid-term furnished share houses aimed specifically at travellers. These will generally make everything hassle-free. Check out www.sydneyterraces.com and www.furnishedproperty.com.au for starters.

Happy house-hunting!
