Following the recent scandal at a Queensland farm, in which backpackers were allegedly sacked after asking for water while working in the fields, we thought we should check out what rights travellers actually have. Here’s a few handy hints to keep in mind for any job in Oz.
Your work rights
- You must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage per hour.
If you’re 21 years and over that is $14.31. If you’re under under 21 years it differs between occupations. To find out the minimum wage for your job call the Fair Work Info Line on 13 13 94.
- If you are employed as casual staff you are entitled to additional pay loading.
- Piece rates (ie getting paid per bucket load picked) can be paid, but employers must pay the minimum hourly rate as well.
- You are entitled to one unpaid 30 minute meal break per day and one paid ten minute rest break.
Handy tips
- Keep your own record of hours worked and wages received
- Know the business name and Australian Business Number (ABN) of your employer
- Ask for your offer of employment and job conditions in writing
- Be aware that you’re entitled to receive a payslip within one day of wages being paid
- Find out the conditions of your accommodation if it comes as a part of your job offer.
Your health
- Drink plenty of water, especially if you have a fruitpicking job. It’s hot out there.
- Try to avoid drinking too much alcohol the night before your shift.
- Wear a hat
- Wear sunscreen
- Wear cool, breathable clothes (you may need to wear protective shoes or other items depending on your job)
