The spiralling rise in the cost of drugs Down Under is leading to a dramatic increase in the number of backpackers choosing to work as self-employed drug runners, according to Aussie police.
An Australian Federal Police report, leaked to The Daily Telegraph, has detailed how some narcotics are now more expensive per kilogram in Australia than anywhere else in the world.
Cocaine now costs $190,000 per kilo in Oz, compared to just $30,000 in the US. As a result, Australia is being targetted by major international cartels.
However, police have also picked up on a growing trend of backpackers cashing in, to pay off debts or fund further trips, by travelling with a small stash, normally of MDMA or ecstasy pills, especially from the UK and Netherlands.
The police admits, however, that many of those caught are Aussie travellers returning home. “They can buy an MDMA tablet for £2 and sell it in Australia for $30,” said one source.
