An Outback Queensland town wants to build a Big Meat Ant in an attempt to attract more tourists to the area.

Augathella, with a population of just 580, wants to spend $200,000 building a statue of the area’s most famous resident.

Half of the cash is set to come from ratepayers, while local authorities hope the Queensland state government will stump up the other $100,000.

The tiny town, located 750km north-west of Brisbane, has already named its football team the Meat Ants.

And like with all the weird and wonderful Big Things dotted across Australia, from bananas to crocodiles to merino sheep, Augathella’s local council is hoping the Big Meat Ant will attract more travellers to the area.

“It’d be a focal point I guess, for people to pull up in and try and keep them in Augathella a couple of days longer,” said Councillor Cecil Russell.

Ever met a Big Things fanatic?
