
Germans have overtaken the Irish
The number of Working Holiday Makers doing harvest work to gain a second year visa leapt by 84 per cent in the year to June 30 2009, according to the latest statistics from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Some 21,727 WHMs succesfully applied for a second year in 08/09, compared to 11,816 in the previous year.
The largest uptake was among South Koreans (6,080) followed by the Irish (4,426), Brits (4,071), Japanese (2,047), Taiwanese (1,338) and Germans (1,066).
Meanwhile, the number of first year Working Holiday visas leapt by nearly 17 per cent, from 142,365 to 165,969.
Brits remained the largest demographic at 36,111 followed by South Koreans (33,426), Germans (19,253), Irish (18,360), French (15,307) and Canadians (8,278)
