A new survey has shown one in eight backpackers in Australia has or has had the sexually transmitted infection, Chlamydia.
In a survey of 430 male and female backpackers in Sydney, 10.7 per cent of men and 14 per cent of women tested positive or had previously contracted the infection, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“In the women, the mean number of sexual partners in the previous three months was 1.7 and in the men it was 2.8,” said Dr Stephen Davies, medical director at the Northern Sydney Sexual Health Service.
The study found 31 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women had a new sex partner en route to Australia, often in Asia and “not always” with a condom.60 per cent claimed they “always” practiced safe sex.
In 2008, 14.6 per cent of Australian men and 14.2 per cent of Australian women in the 16 – 24 age group tested positive for the disease.
The study also found 33 per cent of men and 28 per cent of women are drinking more than double the recommended daily intake of alcohol.
