Surfers Paradise has been named Australia's best travel destination
Queensland is the best Aussie state to travel in, according to a survey of 12,000 people.
The Sunshine State cleaned up in the escape.com.au poll, with almost half (45 per cent) those asked choosing Queensland.
Plus, five of the top six Aussie destinations were all in Queensland, with Surfers Paradise singled out as the
best place in Australia.
Only Melbourne managed to break the northern dominance, being named the second best destination.
The Whitsundays, Port Douglas and Noosa completed the top five, followed by Cairns, Sydney, Margaret River, Hobart and the Great Ocean Road.
And Victorians will be feeling smug, having done the double over their bitter rivals. Not only was Melbourne ranked better than Sydney, but Victoria was named the country’s second best state, while New South Wales could only muster fourth.
Western Australia came third, Tasmania fifth and Northern Territory sixth, with South Australia propping up the table having secured just three per cent of the votes.
HOSTEL TALK
Unsure if travellers really are as obsessed with Queensland as this poll seems to suggest, we took to the streets of Sydney to find our own completely unscientific results. Here’s what the first three backpackers we grabbed had to say about it.
Rosa Aidermueller, 25, Germany
“Western Australia because it’s not so touristic and the weather is nice throughout the entire year.”
Kai Glaeser, 19, Germany
“New South Wales because I think the Botanical Gardens are a really nice place to see. It’s has some great places in general.”
Ruth Kilpatrick, 26, England
“Western Australia. It’s a very laidback place and you can go there just to relax and have a good time.”
