Snorkelling off Town of 1770
I’m about to head up the east coast. Where should I go? James Brent.
Depending on the type of traveller you are, the words “east coast” probably instil either delight or disgust – the route has rightly earnt its reputation for being a booze-fuelled party scene.
However, the reality is that there is so much gorgeous coastline to explore that whether you want to escape the crowds or sleep with the crowds, you’ll probably find what you’re looking for.
You don’t have to spend all your time in Cairns, Airlie Beach and Byron Bay – probably the three biggest backpacker party towns in Oz.
For example, if you’d rather eat your own thongs (that’s flip flops) than have a night out in Cairns, dancing on tables and cheering on wet t-shirt competitions, then simply head up the coast another hour to Port Douglas. It is more expensive, but it’s more chilled out, has a great beach (unlike Cairns) and is much closer to the reef.
There are a couple of things of course you really shouldn’t miss. You’ll struggle to find a traveller, for example, who wouldn’t rate Fraser Island as one of their best experiences Down Under. The fun of the 4WD and the sheer staggering beauty of the island and its lakes make it truly memorable.
And the Whitsundays. It’s not everyday you sail to one of the world’s most stunning beaches (Whitehaven) and dive on the Great Barrier Reef in the same day.
But there’s so much more. Don’t rush the NSW coast. Climb Mt Warning to be the first to see the sun in Oz, or stop by Yamba, said to be like Byron Bay was 20 years ago. Myall Lakes National Park, just north of Newcastle, is another beautiful spot where it’s easy to get away from it all.
If laidback is your style, then you need to put Town of 1770 near the top of your list. You’ll struggle to find a more relaxed community on the east coast.
Divers should fit in the Yongala, just off Townsville, often rated as the best wreck dive in Oz.
Try exploring other islands, like Great Keppel, Hinchinbrook, and Magnetic. And don’t forget one of the ultimate Aussie roadtrips – to Cape York.
