A French traveller has spent an uncomfortable night waiting to be rescued from Karijini National Park in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, report the ABC.
The 26-year-old left a designated walking path and became trapped on a ledge late Tuesday afternoon.
His friends contacted emergency crews, who couldn’t initiate a rescue attempt until Wednesday.
State Emergency Services District Manager Jim Cahill says the man was given blankets and food and supervised throughout the night.
“We’re really happy that the person wasn’t injured,” he said. “If he had been injured, of course the rescue would have taken place at night, there’s no doubt about that.
“But because he wasn’t injured, and was in pretty good physical health, it was decided to let it wait until morning.”
The man was successfully lifted from the gorge.
