A German traveller is expected to be extradited from Queensland to South Australia for her alleged connection to a jewel heist.
Ramona Berninger, 20, has appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court, crying and wearing jeans and a T-shirt. She has been charged with bringing 45 stolen opals, worth $165,000, into Queensland.
Police believe Berninger acted as lookout during the theft, which took place in the South Australian mining town Coober Pedy.
Prosecutors claim the young German backpacker had met prime suspect Carlo Konstantin Kohl several weeks earlier.
Carlo Kohl has since eluded the police despite an ongoing manhunt. He narrowly avoided arrest when spotted in a car with Berninger in River Heads. Kohl escaped by allegedly holding a replica gun to a man’s head and stealing a van, before finally losing detectives after a five-hour chase.
