Irish backpacker Niall McDonough
New South Wales Police have confirmed a body that washed up at Brunswick Heads is that of missing Irish backpacker Niall McDonough.
The 30-year-old had not been seen since he went for a walk on Friday, June 12, leaving his girlfriend at their Byron Bay hostel.
The morning after he disappeared, some of his belongings were found on a park bench near the Cape Byron Lighthouse.
Police say a post-mortem examination has since been carried out and Mr McDonough’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to his parents, brother and sister, who arrived in Australia on June 17.
