ASK TUMBRELLA: What to do in Darwin

I’m going to be heading through Darwin soon. Is it worth spending much time there? Greg Callis, via email

Darwin is famous for being a gateway to Kakadu National Park. But there’s a whole lot in the city itself worth sticking around for.

It’s one of Australia’s edgiest, friendliest and downright cool cities, with plenty on offer to keep you busy for a few days.

For starters, the area is home to the world’s biggest reptile – the saltwater crocodile. As a result, it boasts two of the country’s most exciting animal experiences. Head out of town to the Adelaide River to watch the six metre giants dramatically leap out of the water for a hunk of buffalo meat, or if you’re feeling really brave then enter the Cage of Death (pictured) at Crocosaurus Cove.

Darwin’s not just about big teeth though. The Mindil Beach sunset market (Thursdays and Sundays) are a must if you like joining the rest of town for great music, food and stalls. Parap market (Saturday mornings) is also worth a look.

For your culture fix, make sure you don’t miss Fannie Bay Gaol, plus The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (both free and worthy of an hour or two exploring).

Stop off at Stokes Hill Wharf to munch on cheap fish and cheaps, get your adrenalin hit jetboating or chill out at the open-air Deckchair Cinema.

Another option for a relaxed tropical evening is to head over to fancy Cullen Bay and jump on one of the many yachts that offer sunset cruises, normally complete with BBQ and BYO booze.

Whatever you do, there’s no escaping a night out on Mitchell Street – afterall, Darwinians drink 50 per cent more than other Aussies!
