French Backpackers Rescued from Croc-Infested Darwin Waters

Three French backpackers have been rescued – by accident – from croc-infested waters near Darwin.

A rescue team searching for another boat discovered them bobbing about in the dangerous waters.

The foreign backpackers – two men and a woman – had set off in a small dinghy to go fishing but got into trouble in choppy seas close to the harbour.

The boat sank yesterday afternoon and the tourists were left floundering in the water – home to crocodiles, stingers and sharks – with no hope of being rescued, reports The Age.

A helicopter and customs boat had been sent out to find a missing research team near Bathurst Island, about 80 kilometres north of Darwin, that was 24 hours overdue.

The boat was quickly located by the helicopter and as the customs vessel made its way from the mainland its crew stumbled across the backpackers floating in the water about 2.40pm.

Mr Badham said the backpackers had not set off an alert when the boat went down near Channel Rock.

“Now it’s very unlikely they would have been found any other way, so those three people, they’ve just won lotto.”

  1. This is no surprise! I worked in France white water canoeing one summer and the french used to go down a grade three river in canadian canoes with the girl at the front topless, the dog and the baby tied into the middle and Pierre at the back. Half of them would tip over nearly drowning the whole family!
