Britain’s Ben Southall is the winner of Tourism Queensland’s World’s Best Job competition.
The 34-year-old will move into a luxury apartment overlooking Hamilton Island and begin a six-month $150,000 role as “island caretaker”, the job seemingly half the world wanted.
It started with 35,000 applicants back in January. The final 16 candidates have spent the past few days cruising the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, and dealing with the media spotlight.

Mr Southall will stroll the white sands, snorkel the reef, take care of “a few minor tasks”, and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates to promote the region.
The new job will be a change from his previous positions as an event manager, charity fundraiser and tour guide.
Mr Southall, who has a Bachelor of Science degree, describes himself as adventurous and crazy. He says his love of scuba-diving and snorkelling has made him “practically a fish”, and has vast travelling experience.
”I’m a great communicator, love meeting people, and love meeting people and immersing myself in other cultures,” Mr Southall said in his video application.
