It’s a dilemma many travellers face – what do you do when your best friend gets married on the other side of the world? After all, putting in an appearance would mean spending the sort of cash that would cut short your travels.
It was even harder for Welsh ecology worker Barbara Haddrill, 30. She refuses to fly due to her green beliefs, but had been asked to be her best friend’s bridesmaid. In Brisbane.
However, she came up with the solution – spending seven weeks crossing 18 countries by land and sea. Travelling by everything from bicycle to horse drawn cart, always with her bridesmaid’s dress stuffed in her rucksack.
Barbara finally arrived in Oz thanks to a cargo ship from Singapore, which she shared with 15 Russian male sailors. She has since written a book called Babs2Brisbane about her adventures.
